Butterflies always seem so beautiful, nice and cheerful to us.
And clean too.
But they are not at all.
They eat quite disgusting things.
Pretty harmless is mud.
We learned as children that butterflies eat nectar, but that is only part of the truth.
Because sugar is all nice and good.
But as a butterfly you need other nutrients and you get salt, nitrogen, proteins and amino acids from mud puddles.
Besides, butterflies are more often caught drinking blood, sweat and tears.
Here are a few crocodile tears.
And: they eat um…....excrements of humans and animals.
A turd like this is supposed to be almost as good as a restaurant. For a butterfly.
It contains lots of nutrients.
They also drink urine from other animals and use their own urine to "predigest" their own meals.
I can't adequately document that right now, so you'll get some larvae as a placeholder.
But the most crass:
They are carnivores and they like carrion.
So rotting carcasses.
They are carnivores, but they do not have teeth.
That's why it's quite good if the meat is a bit older, because they lick it and don't bite it.
I've never liked it when a butterfly sits on me, and now I know why.
